Foreword
I congratulate the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, which this year is celebrating the thirtieth anniversary of its establishment. I greatly welcome the fact that, as part of those celebrations, the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences is publishing this very valuable book on Ireland.
The book paints a comprehensive picture of Ireland's history, culture, people, society, economy and international relations. This book will, I believe, make an important contribution to developing greater understanding in China of Ireland's culture, its history and people.
Ireland and China have very friendly political and diplomatic relations. Our Governmental leaders meet each other regularly. The bilateral relationship between China and Ireland is broadening and deepening through intensified contacts, agreements and exchanges in a wide range of areas: trade, commercial, educational, cultural, tourism and human contacts.
I therefore see the publication of this book as both valuable and timely.
I commend the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences for the conclusion of this very worthy project and am sure that further research into Irish issues will continue to prosper at the Academy.
With best wishes for continued success,
Declan Kelleher
Ambassador of Ireland to the People's Republic of China
