Miss Baker was woken up by a great noise. Their ship hit something and stopped. The water ran into the side of it and all the people were in a fluster（在慌乱中）. She couldn't see anything. She was taken on to a lifeboat before the ship went down under the water. A few days later she and the other two men got to a small island. They had neither food nor dry clothes. The girl tried to mend her broken jacket and skirt while the men went to look for something to eat. But she failed, she could find nothing useful. Some days passed and nobody came to save them. The girl lost her confidence and tried to kill herself. Her new friends found this and looked after her better.

“You must be hungry, ”said the captain.“Go to eat something first.”

“Wait a minute, ”said Miss Baker.“Give me a suit of clean clothes first, please.”

“But why? ”

“Nobody can know how hungry I'm now. But they can see how dirty my clothes are! ”
